A seminar called “Breaking Down the Brick Wall -
Hints & Tips for Family Historians” will take place on Saturday the 27th
September 2008.
The room in which the talk takes place is only small
so places are restricted. We will be charging £3 per head and will be a
ticket only event. Although I say it is a ticket event no actual tickets
will be issued. I will have a record of those who said they will come with
me on the day. You can pay when you arrive.
The subject of the talk tries to cover the typical
problems family historians encounter in their researches and discusses
techniques that might be employed in overcoming them. Some examples of the
problems covered are Adoption and Illegitimacy; multiple candidates in
church records; the family in one place for several generations but the
disappear; cannot find birth entry; cannot find marriage; "he just
disappears off the face of the earth" etc, etc.
We will do our best to cover your problem. Email me
with what your problem is and what you have already tried. You will need to
tell me well beforehand. If you do I will try and cover that problem on the
day. We are not going to solve problems ourselves but hope to guide you into
how you might do it yourself. However, not all brick walls have a solution
or if they do the solutions might involve a lot of work. IF YOU WANT YOUR
QUERY TO BE COVERED ON THE DAY THEN EMAIL ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

The talk will be in the Townley Parker Room, Astley
Hall. Car parking is at the end of Hall Gate Lane and is free. To get to the
Hall follow the signed footpath that passes in front of the white farm.
It is a walk of 250 yards. See the attached maps. If you have never been to
Astley Hall before then it is worth arriving a little earlier to see this
attractive and historic building. The Hall itself opens at noon. The LFHHS
research centre at Astley Hall is open from noon until 4:30.
The talk will start at 1:30 pm and finish
approximately at 4:00. We will have a break for a drink about half way
through. Hopefully the Hall’s snack bar will be open where drinks and
biscuits can be purchased. I will confirm this later. No food is at present
available locally so a packed lunch will be needed. No food or drink is to
be consumed in the Hall.
