Glossary:  Parish records and Parish registers

This description is provided by Olive Thexton of Fylde Branch

In Englans and Wales, these consist of records of Baptisms, Confirmations, Banns, Marriages and Burials/Funerals.

Before 1754 they are commonly all in one register. They all continue after 1837 until the present day.

Older Parish records can be seen at County Record Offices and Church of the Latter Day Saints centres.

Some can be seen at the churches by appointment with the Vicar, as a last resort! Very few are likely to have the registers now.

Tips

If you have an acronym or term that is not listed, send an email giving the letters and the context. We will try to find out for you, and add it to this list in the glossary
